Our Affordable Stay at Rathbaun Hotel in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, Irelnd June 23, Tweet The Rathbaun Hotel in the small town of Lisdoonvarna in County Clare was the perfect first stop on our Ireland road-trip complete with a lively bar and restaurant, comfortable room, prime location, and wonderful staff. The Rathbaun Hotel is smack dab in the middle of Main Street — across the street is the Lisdoonvarna Cafe, and sandwiched next to a gift shop, post office, a Spar convenience store, and just a few steps away from at least six additional hotels, bars, and restaurants.
The shower was a little small, but any clean shower with excellent water pressure is okay for me. The restaurant and bar on the first floor is deceivingly huge. A large bar takes up the majority of the left side, and the rest of the room is filled with booths, tables, and a small stage for the live Irish band, Ceolan, that plays every evening from 8: The bar filled up each night with guests stopping by for dinner and those staying all night to hear the music.
We had drinks here both nights and dinner once. I tried the broccoli and chicken in a white wine sauce and really enjoyed it! It was plenty of food for the price approx.

Even if the water is always cold its worth getting in just to say you did! The west coast of Ireland is full of small towns and villages and has no cities as such as Galway and Limerick although technically on the west coast are still a long way from the brunt of the Atlantic Ocean.
The circuits can be driven or cycled but cycling would give the scenery more justice although it may be hard work sometimes as it is perpetually windy.

Europe’s Biggest Singles Festival A report on Lisdoonvarna Ireland’s Match Making Festival on BBC World this morning perked my interest is what they described as Europe’s biggest singles‘ festival – one that attracts swarms of singles looking for mates – and according to some interviewed instance matches are not uncommon.
I had vaguely heard of Lisdoonvarna as an old Spa Town, whose heyday was in the and s when it was a thriving health resort where many flocked to take its purportedly therapeutic waters. But it seems, according to the Match Maker Ireland festival’s official site , that the town has always been known for its ballyhooed “Craic” – which i gather means merriment and fun with a slightly ribald flavor http: But all types came and now it’s not just the Irish that come but folks from all over the world – BBC interviewed an Irish emigre farmer from Wisconsin here looking for an instant bride to take back to help with the cow milking, etc.
But many also come just for the Craic – the non-stop dancing daily from midnight to the wee hours so if looking for a mate, head to the Ole Sod and Lisdoonvarna – i’m on my way. And i have only seen Lisdoonvarna on water bottles – being the only mineral springed water in Ireland, according to the site below – i am piqued to visit it and wonder what anyone who is familiar with it thinks of it? Lisdoonvarna, Clare Ireland Lisdoonvarna also has the only natural spa water in Ireland, so visiting it at other times is a brilliant idea.

Making a Match in Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking is one of Ireland’s oldest traditions and, for the last couple of hundred years, a good deal of it has taken place in Lisdoonvarna during September and early October. The name Lisdoonvarna comes from ‘Lios Duin Bhearna’, which means the lios or enclosure of the fort in the gap. The town developed into a tourist centre as early as the middle of the 18th-century when a top Limerick surgeon discovered the beneficial effects of its mineral waters.
People travelled from near and far to bathe in, and drink, the mineral waters. Rich in iron, sulphur and magnesium, the waters gave relief from the symptoms of certain diseases including rheumatism and glandular fever. The Spa Hotel was the centre around which the village developed.
